I keep my exoskeletons to myself5/28/2023 Yet as the kid grows, Kris finds her footing, raising a child whose irrepressible spark cannot be dampened by the harsh realities of the world. Grieving the loss of her wife and thoroughly unprepared for the reality of raising a child alone, Kris teeters on the edge of collapse, fumbling in a daze of alcohol, shame, and self-loathing. Kris is a Shadester and a new mother to a baby born with a second shadow of her own. Within the Department, corruption and prejudice run rampant, giving rise to an underclass of so-called Shadesters who are disenfranchised, publicly shamed, and deprived of civil rights protections. In a United States not so unlike our own, the Department of Balance has adopted a radical new form of law enforcement: rather than incarceration, wrongdoers are given a second (and sometimes, third, fourth, and fifth) shadow as a reminder of their crime-and a warning to those they encounter. Newitz makes a clear effort to be inclusive, and the book features some prominent characters of color, as well as a trans woman whose cis female partner takes up the point of view narration for a few chapters. The book’s plot moves across time and through different characters’ points of view. It’s a conceit redolent of contemporary Reddit wars, and today’s atmosphere of “alternative truth” and feminist excavation of previous buried history. The two groups engaged in “edit wars” as each tries to twist the timeline to its benefit. In its time-traveling premise, a feminist group known as Daughters of Harriet battle an unnamed ersatz-incel cabal aimed at a male supremacist future. The Future of Another Timeline, though, is–ironically–very much an artifact of its age. Both feature alternate realities that center on women’s reproductive freedom. ‘The Future of Another Timeline’ by Annalee NewitzĪnnalee Newitz’s The Future of Another Timeline is feminist sci-fi novel that will probably see a great many comparisons to The Handmaid’s Tale.

Bear by marian engel pages5/28/2023 Last year, a screenshot of a Tumblr post about the cover for Bear appeared on the image-sharing site Imgur, and it went viral, with almost a million views. Her hand is raised in a come-hither motion, and her eyes seem to be at once yearning for the reader and warning the reader away. The woman’s hair, improbably, covers the nipples of her naked breasts, even though most laws of anatomy indicate that the nipple of her right breast should almost definitely be revealed. The bear’s fur and the woman’s long hair meld together into a chestnut-colored pool. A menacing bear lurks behind a woman, his beady eyes and triangular claws glinting in the shadows of its fur. It is, as promotional materials for a newer edition of the book claim, “ Heavy Metal-inspired," which is to say that it is lurid and shocking and fun, and also aimed directly at the adolescent male gaze. To the left of this paragraph, you’ll see the 1976 book cover for the paperback release of Bear. As you can imagine, this is the sort of premise that probably makes book cover artists lick their lips with anticipation. Let’s lay it out as simply as possible: Marian Engel’s Bear is a novel about a woman who has an erotic relationship with a bear.

They both die at the end book series5/27/2023 The story focuses less on the actions, but on their thoughts, ideas, and budding feelings. During their last 24 hours, they traverse the streets, spending the few hours they have left in the world together. In They Both Die At The End, we follow two lads, Rufus and Mateo, who both don’t want to die alone. This gives them time to say goodbye to loved ones, experience bucket list activities, or tie loose ends. The story is set in an alternate world, where Death-Cast, a company, selects people to die by politely letting them know that their impending death will come within the next 24 hours. Anne of green gables book series review5/27/2023 Marsden’s reprise of Montgomery’s time-honored tale stays true and manages to hit all the notes of the original. Anne manages to find herself in many a predicament, but time after time her inherent goodness always rights her wrongdoings. Brimming over with imagination and having a propensity for florid ramblings, Anne stands out in the plainspoken town but manages to weave her way into the hearts of those who meet her, including her new “bosom friend,” the mild and well-behaved Diana Barry, and her academic rival and possible love interest, Gilbert Blythe. Montgomery’s novel fairly faithfully, orphan Anne Shirley, with fiery tresses and an even more red-hot temper, arrives in Avonlea to help aging brother and sister Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert at their lovely home, Green Gables. A beloved and feisty heroine gets a graphic-novel makeover.

Better nate than ever book series5/27/2023 Tim Federle’s “hilarious and heartwarming debut novel” ( Publishers Weekly) is full of broken curfews, second chances, and the adventure of growing up-because sometimes you have to get four hundred miles from your backyard to finally feel at home. There’s an open casting call for E.T.: The Musical, and Nate knows this could be the difference between small-town blues and big-time stardom. (Heck, he’d settle for seeing a Broadway show.) But how is Nate supposed to make his dreams come true when he’s stuck in Jankburg, Pennsylvania, where no one (except his best pal Libby) appreciates a good show tune? With Libby’s help, Nate plans a daring overnight escape to New York. His whole life, he’s wanted to star in a Broadway show. Tempting Clover by Decadent Kane5/27/2023 It's Friday! Woot! Have a wonderful weekend.īreaking a goblin's curse is more difficult than Clover thought. This is a huge improvement over last year when I wanted to nap five days of the week because I was so tired. I've only had to have one nap this month. Yet I get a B+ for relaxing before bed and going to sleep at a reasonable hour. I get an A+ for revising, but only a D for managing to balance writing and networking. I'm doing all right for my goals this year. I have to keep reminding myself he's just 3.ĥ. A genius! Then later in the day he threw a fit to take down the bathroom because the ice cubes I gave him to play with in the tub were melting. The other day my husband was playing Flow on his iPhone and the boy wanted to give it a try. Why do I feel so nervous? I know my son is smart, sweet, and well mannered. I have a parent-teacher conference this morning. If I have no luck there, I'll make a list and start sending queries out in small groups.Ĥ. I have a specific publisher in mind that I want to try first. Oh! That reminds me: thank you to all of you who left tips on my Wednesday post about querying. I can't count it as one of the short stories for my goals this year. I sent my short story for the Untethered Realms anthology to be revised. Best I get started on the revisions for my superhero WIP.Ģ. Is anyone done reading yet?! Waiting is the hardest part. Yay! Right on schedule with my goals for this year. |
